December 2 is National #SpecialEducationDay! This day marks the anniversary of the nation’s first federal special education law, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, signed by President Ford on December 2, 1975.
It has been 46 incredible years of providing access to education for all children, including children with disabilities. Looking back, IDEA resulted in many changes beyond bringing students equal education! The integration of students has helped to remove the stigma of disabilities. Another result of IDEA was the stimulation of technology for students with disabilities and the classrooms. These technologies have improved the education of all students.
As we celebrate, it is good to explore the history of the IDEA legislation and honor all the milestones that have been achieved for Special Education so far and remind us of the continued progress to come.
