Every Voice Deserves to Be Heard: Lauren’s Journey as an SLP

How Epic Special Education Staffing Supports SLPs – and the Students Who Rely on Them

Speech-Language Pathology plays a vital role in helping students build the skills they need to communicate, learn, and connect with others. To better understand this work in action, we spoke with Lauren G., an SLP working with Epic Special Education Staffing, to learn more about her experience in the field. For many SLPs, the work is both deeply personal and incredibly rewarding, and Lauren’s journey reflects just how significant these experiences can be. Through her work in special education, she has seen firsthand how communication can build confidence, behavior, and long-term success.

At Epic Special Education Staffing, stories like Lauren’s are at the heart of what we see every day: professionals making a lasting difference in students’ lives through consistent support and connection.

Finding Purpose Through Speech-Language Pathology and Communication

Lauren’s path to becoming an SLP began in an unexpected place. While working as an English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher in Korea, she experienced firsthand what it felt like to struggle with communication in a new environment. That experience sparked a desire to help others express themselves more confidently. With guidance from her mother, a fellow educator, she discovered Speech-Language Pathology and found a career that aligned with both her skills and her purpose.

Leveling the Playing Field: The Impact of Speech-Language Pathology

For Lauren, working as a Speech-Language Pathologist is about more than developing language skills. It is about creating access. Communication plays a central role in how students learn, build relationships, and engage with the world around them. In special education settings, early support through Speech-Language Pathology can help level the playing field, giving students the tools they need to participate alongside their peers.

She emphasizes that communication is foundational to being able to fully experience life. When students are given the support to express their needs, thoughts, and emotions, they gain confidence and independence that extends far beyond the classroom.

In many school settings, that kind of progress depends not just on the clinician, but on the environment around them: collaboration, consistency, and the right support systems in place.

From First Words to Full Sentences: Watching Progress Unfold as an SLP

One of the most rewarding parts of being an SLP is witnessing student growth over time. Lauren describes working with students who initially struggled to communicate at all, only to later experience a breakthrough in language development. Those moments, whether it is a student speaking their first word, forming short sentences, or using an alternative communication device, are what make the work so fulfilling.

She recalls working with a preschool student who initially spoke in only one- to two-word phrases and often displayed challenging behaviors. As his language skills improved, those behaviors began to decrease. Within a few months, he was speaking in longer sentences and even modeling communication for a peer who joined the group. Watching that transformation unfold reinforced why she chose a career as an SLP.

Lauren notes that working with younger students can be especially rewarding because progress can happen quickly. These early gains set the foundation for future learning and social development.

The Realities of Being an SLP: Challenges and Growth

Like many Speech-Language Pathologists, Lauren has encountered difficult moments in her work. One situation involved a student experiencing a severe meltdown, with behaviors that were difficult to manage. After trying several strategies without success, she remembered a technique she had seen that involved using music to redirect attention.

She began singing a familiar song and gradually invited the student to participate by filling in the missing words. The shift was immediate. The student became engaged, the behavior de-escalated, and the interaction turned into a positive communication moment. Experiences like this highlight the creativity and adaptability required in Speech-Language Pathology, as well as the importance of meeting students where they are.

How Epic Special Education Staffing Helps SLPs Thrive on Assignment

Throughout her assignments, Lauren has appreciated the consistent support she’s received from Epic Special Education Staffing. She highlights the responsiveness and accessibility of the team, noting that support is always available when questions or challenges arise. From her recruiter to the finance team, she has consistently felt guided and reassured throughout her assignments.

That level of support allows Speech-Language Pathologists to focus more fully on their work with students rather than on administrative concerns. Weekly pay, clear communication, and a dependable support system all contribute to a smoother and more positive assignment experience.

Flexibility is another major benefit Lauren values. As someone whose family life involves relocation, contract opportunities give her the ability to return to California, where she is licensed and feels most at home. At the same time, working as an SLP on assignment creates opportunities to explore new locations and gain diverse professional experiences.

In a field where burnout can be a real concern, having the ability to take time between assignments is especially important. Lauren shares that this flexibility helps her stay energized and engaged in her work. For many SLPs, this balance is essential for maintaining long-term career satisfaction while continuing to support positive outcomes for students.

Supporting Every Student’s Potential Through Speech-Language Pathology

At the heart of Lauren’s work is a belief that every student deserves the opportunity to succeed. Special education services, including Speech-Language Pathology, play a critical role in helping students access the same opportunities as their peers. By developing communication skills early, students are better equipped to navigate both academic and social environments.

Lauren sees this positive change every day in her work. Whether it is helping a student form their first words or guiding them toward more complex communication, each step forward contributes to a larger journey of growth and independence.
