Your Inspiration for Thanksgiving Celebration in Special Education

“Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today and creates a vision for tomorrow.” – Melody Beattie

According to Harvard Health Publishing in positive psychology research, gratitude is strongly and consistently associated with greater happiness. Gratitude helps people feel more positive emotions, relish good experiences, improve their health, deal with adversity, and build strong relationships.

No wonder that “Thanksgiving” is one of the most emotional, festive, and cozy holidays we celebrate.   Thanksgiving celebration could be a family tradition to many – that sumptuous turkey dish, mashed potato, sweet potato casserole, pumpkin pie, cranberry sauce and the like! The fun feeling of witnessing a parade that our city has prepared or the ever-famous Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.  Or sometimes the thrill of watching NFL football with of course the whole family is enough.

Having to imagine all of it makes us a bit excited, and the thought of home gives us a feeling of warmth.  But since it’s yet 4 weeks to go, we have all the time to prepare! And while preparing can be difficult or easy, how do you do it in special education? How do you make the kids feel the spirit of the “Thanksgiving?” The highlighted articles below would give you a glimpse of how other special educators do it in their own special way! And watch for yourself and be inspired on how some schools in special education program prepared and invited guests to celebrate Thanksgiving last year – because YES it’s possible!
